Definiteness of Purpose

Definiteness of Purpose

In his iconic book, Think and Grow Rich Napoleon Hill emphasizes how important it is to have definiteness of purpose in order to achieve one’s goals. If you do not OWN this book and read it regularly, you need to adjust your thoughts.

The first major thing Napoleon Hill says you need is a Major Purpose in Life. I suppose that can be a cross breed of your WHY and your GOAL. Or depending on who we are talking about simply your WHY.

The language Mr. Hill uses in his book is understandably archaic. The book was published in the beginning of the 20th century. So every time I read it two things have happened. The first is I have grown and changed so what I read I see with a different understanding. The other thing is my vocabulary and understanding has improved.

Definiteness of Purpose means something to me that may be different from what you think it might mean. I have defined and continue to define my Major Purpose in Life. That is my why and my goals to achieve my why. Definiteness of purpose to me means that every day I am working to achieve my Major Purpose in Life. It also means that I am thinking of it pretty much “all the time”.

If I am wasting time watching Netflix when I ought to be working, my self control is taking over more and more often to get me on track. Because I am teaching and running The Right Choice as well as working my ACN Business I need to have strict control over my focus. My focus needs to be on the tasks I have set a priority to. Not every task is generating direct progress to my Major Purpose BUT it is clearing the way for my consciousness to work toward there.

The word Definiteness means a lot to me too. I am most definite in my goals. Therefore I look at everything I do as a step that will either take me to my goal or help clear the way to make the achievement easier. I truly believe the achievement of my goals is within the realm of possibility for me and that all I need to do is remain focused and set to work.

I go to sleep thinking about what I am grateful for and work on programming my sub-conscious mind to work day and night toward my goal. I believe in the law of attraction and see how that is starting to become more and more evident to me through the happenstances of everyday life. I must remain steadfast in my Definiteness of Purpose.

When you train your subconscious mind in your Definiteness of Purpose you start to change your paradigms. Your paradigms are what you use in your subconscious mind to make decisions. Basically they are habits. Have you noticed that often you hear someone start to say something and you have already formed an opinion without hearing their whole statement? You are answering out of habit.

When you train your subconscious mind to your Definiteness of Purpose you will move your paradigms there as well. Eventually you will find your reaction to things around you being more positively aligned with your Major Purpose in Life.

Some people liken this to the Law of Attraction. I believe in what is happening to my life – I don’t care what label is applied.

Will you try this?

Action

"Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you." - Thomas Jefferson

If you have read any of my blog posts you will likely see a common thread. That is my struggles with self improvement and developing my business. My self improvement has been ongoing for a few years now and I will not lessen my efforts there at all. Even when those closest to me “ridicule” my efforts.

You see the main reason I am changing myself is my family and those people closest to me. The better person I become, the better I will treat those I love and care for and the better I can make their lives. When I was made fun of last weekend it didn’t even phase me…. In fact it just swirled over me and dissipated into the ether.

Now my business. Why am I working it so hard? I owe it to my family to make my business work. My business is what will save my family. My landscaping business is growing nicely but I now strongly believe in residual income AND the importance of having multiple streams of income.

I think Linda started to understand my reason for doing what I am doing. You see I am striving to earn what Linda earns so she can do whatever she wants to at that point. I floated a couple of ideas to her. Perhaps she could leave her quilting machine at her moms and spend three or four days a week in Athens – quilting and helping her mom out.

My goals are simple, let lined do what she wants to for her own personal fulfilment and help Linda’s mom out. In order to do that I must be of service to others. I am going to be able to help others by helping them see they can have and achieve their own dreams, by helping them save money in their homes and businesses, by offering the very best landscape services possible, by teaching. And likely more and more as I discover talents and services other people want and need. I will give freely of myself to anyone who needs me.

I write down my goals each and every morning. I also write out what I am grateful for. I am a very lucky man and want to spread my wealth to others.

ACN is an amazing conduit to achieve my goals but so too are my teaching and my work with Todd and The Right Choice. I am working very hard right now to work on all areas of my life to the best of my ability. In fact, I am stretching myself so I can exceed my abilities. The best way to grow is to stretch.

As I am continuing to work at my crafts I am seeing more and more opportunities expose themselves to me. Every day I will continue to work at my tasks in the purpose of helping others.

Lets see how well it goes. I know it will go well but ONLY if I work well.

Great to talk to you again.

The Story of the Sower Part 1

2017 is The Year of the Harvest

That was declared last week at our International Event in Phoenix.

I have, by my count 2 months, 24 days, 20 hours and 43 minutes until then. Excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day I have 83 days to do my bidding. I am going to pique 5 people a day for services and then see if they are interested in the business. That is 410 people. WOW. I’d better get cracking.

I did 6 today so that is 6 / 410 = 1.4% of my goal!

I have spent a long time preparing the ground, sharpening my tools, but not seeding. I have committed to what I mentioned above and am prepared to stand by that.

So what do I need to do? Damn it, I am a horticulturist. What would I do if I was tasked with growing a crop I have never grown before. Study the crop to determine what conditions I need, soil, light, temperature, water, pH, etc.

  • I would then make the conditions favourable.
  • I would propagate the plants the best way possible as reflected in my research.
  • I would care for the plants optimizing all of the growth factors of light, heat, water, pH, etc.
  • I would protect the plants from outside influences both biological and physiological.
  • I would observe the crop and harvest at the optimum time.
  • I would then reap the rewards as determined by the Law of Compensation

So how do I do that with my ACN Business?

  • I have been studying for 3 years.

  • I went to a recent International Event to hone some of my skills and met some amazing people including a guardian angel named Lerna Powel. She gave me some INVALUABLE lessons on customer acquisition. I started this morning on a three month – 86 days less four days for Christmas and New Years – quest to pique 5 people a day for services. That will net me 410 piques before the next international event.

If I can achieve a 2% achievement rate I ought to have 8 new customers. If I achieve a 5% rate 20. I’m really striving for more than 5% but we shall see.

So what am I doing? I am holding my own feet to the fire. In my Daytimer I am writing my goal and my progress. I am starting my doing at least hit 5 people a day.

I won’t write about this every day… I promise but I will keep you posted about how my progress is going.

I am seeding. I am sorting before I sow therefore I am sowing short season beans. Easy to grow, few pests and tasty! Yup. I am going after low hanging fruit.

Chat more later!

Learned VS Learning

In times of change the Learners will inherit the Earth while the Learned will find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists. – Eric Hoffer

I heard that from a mentor of mine, Bob Proctor. And holy wow. That really makes me feel valuated. I don’t mean to sound superior. Honest, BUT it validates my idea of always trying to learn. Not that I need the validation but it helps me encourage others to learn.

I see many of my contemporaries who left school to work in the mills basically stuck there. They learned enough to do their jobs and nothing more. I see people all over the place stuck and yet blaming everything else but themselves. They expect their employer to tell them what to do and yet they were probably given every opportunity to upgrade and refused it because it was on a weekend or at least not on “company” time.

There are so many people who are not equipped for the new economy and yet are peacefully oblivious to the devastation that could be coming for them. I was terrified for both of my kids when they were in high school. One wanted to be a lawyer and the other an accountant. Now they have both (on their own) seen the light – one is training to be a horticulturist and the other is a trained brewer. Boo yah.

You see one reason I am doing so much personal training is I believe I am not good enough to do what I am doing. Every time I start to think I am on top of my game something comes along to prove me otherwise. That is a good thing.

My dad died shortly after he retired. Most guys do – die just after they retire. I believe it was because he stopped learning. He used to read accounting and tax law bulletins every day at lunch. He would read the newspaper for business news. The day he retired is the day he stopped doing that. He basically died then. It took a few years to be buried but he died then. It wasn’t his fault, he was doing what society told him to do.

Short post today but there it is. NEVER STOP LEARNING.

May You Live all the Days of Your Life

"May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift

It is an interesting thought – May you live all the days of your life. What does that mean to you? It means something to me. It means that every day is MINE and MINE alone to live. It means that like last night when we were moving furniture at a clients building, my knees burning, back aching, it was my day to live.

I have been re-discovering my ability to take joy in every day. When I was a young boy I could do that.  Then I went to school and “they” took that away from me. Then I went to work and “they” kept it away from me. Now I am taking it back.

So last night, yes it was hard work, yes most of our crew failed to show up, but I was able to live the night.

There will be times in your day no matter what you are doing that you will have times that you do not “like”. Who cares? Turn the do not like situation into a positive situation. I turned each task into a challenge. Can I carry ten more totes up the stairs before I take a rest? Can I lift this chair onto the dolly and get it to the stairs before the crew is there to take it up the stairs?

May you live all the days of your life.

Every morning I start my day with an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE. When my alarm goes off I hit the snooze button and lie in bed and review all of the things I am grateful for. I also look ahead on the day and look at all of the good things that will be happening to me. After a walk with my dog Bosley, I write a list of 10 things I am grateful for in my life. You see I believe I wake up in neutral. My brain had a hard re-set at night during my sleep and it is entirely up to me to set my mindset for the day. Actually I believe it is my RESPONSIBILITY to set my mindset for the day. It is my responsibility to everyone around me to make sure that I have a positive mindset.

I am doing my best to look at every situation and try to approach it in a positive way. Last night one of our crew members “didn’t know” we were working. Rather than get upset, we just did the work we needed to do and moved on. I was very grateful that my son, Morgan, was there. Not just grateful for the help he gave us but grateful for the time we were able to spend and chat.

May you live all the days of your life.

In the evening before I go to bed I list off in my mind all of the things I am grateful for. I also review in y mind the goals I have for my life. Then as I fall asleep my conscious mind is programmed with positive thoughts and my subconscious mind can work on shifting my paradigms.

May you live all the days of your life.

My dreams are usually positive. I wake rested. And my new day can start again in a positive mindset.

May you live all the days of your life.

Peace
