March 8, 2013 - Realm of Success

“Success is NOT the realm of genetics. Success is the realm of PRACTICE!” Robin Sharma

So.... What does that mean? Here is what it means to me...

For the most part of my life I was under the impression life (the universe) controlled me. I thought that if I tripped and fell, it was some exterior force acting upon me. In reality, there is only one person who has any direct control over my success. That person is ME.

I am still confronted with those who might say something like, “You have terrible luck.” I think of Jim Rohn’s teaching that says it is not the direction the wind blows that matters, but it is the set of one’s sails that determines the course.

I still have students who say to me, “I’m not good at school!” Well, school is school. It is the same for everyone in class. I look at students who hunker down, change their attitude from an attitude of stress relieving to goal achieving and they succeed. They may not do 100% but they do succeed.

So.... It doesn’t matter what my father, grandfather, mother, grandmother, aunt, uncle or any other has accomplished, that all means nothing to my success. In every part of my life, I can only blame myself for my life. I used to look at my dad and my brother and how good they were at math and how bad was. You know what? No one cares....

So who cares? .... I care. About what I am and my personal life phylosophy.

Until the first week of grade nine I had never played the trumpet. I could read music and know what keys on the piano were for what note, that sort of thing. I was determined to be in the senior concert band before too long. I was in the senior band before the month was out. I was playing 3rd trumpet, but I was in the band!

How did I do that you may ask. PRACTICE!

I hated plant identification at Niagara Parks. Darn near killed my academic career. By 3rd year I was acing plant id tests. Not only that, I have been teaching Plant ID for 20 years now.

How did I do that you may ask. PRACTICE!

So, stop using crutches. Start practicing. Achieve the level of excellence you are aiming for in one area and then move on to master another area. Pretty soon everyone will be looking at you in amazement.
